The Newsletter Committee conducted a survey among ACDM members to explore the varied career trajectories within our community. We’re delighted by the excellent responses showcasing the diverse paths our members have pursued. This article features Eva Alder’s journey in CDM.

Current Role: Director Data Quality Analysts

Organization: Merck

Years in CDM: 10-15 years

Eva, a committed expert at Merck, has navigated an engaging path into the field of Clinical Data Management. Her journey reflects a mix of curiosity, flexibility, and a passion for harnessing the power of data.

As a child, Eva dreamt of becoming a lion tamer, but her path took a surprising turn when she discovered Clinical Data Management (CDM) during a job interview for a sales role. Intrigued by the world of data, she began her CDM career focusing on data review, cleaning, and writing SOPs for archiving. Eva’s initial attraction to CDM was her passion for data, but it’s the ongoing changes within the field that have kept her engaged. She enjoys being surrounded by fellow “data nerds” and has seen the industry evolve, notably with the shift away from paper studies, a change that took longer than expected.

For those just starting their careers in Clinical Data Management, Eva offers some sage advice: “Connect with every industry expert and read what they are posting on LinkedIn. You will recognise trends in the industry early. Data Management is a field of constant progress and changes. Do not expect anything to remain finalised or stable for more than a year. If your favourite phrase is: ‘This is how we always did it,’ then DM is not for you.’” Her perspective highlights the dynamic nature of the field and the importance of staying adaptable and forward-thinking.

Eva’s journey serves as an inspiration to anyone considering a career in CDM, showing that even the most unexpected beginnings, such as dreaming of becoming a lion tamer, can lead to a fulfilling and impactful role in a field as dynamic as Clinical Data Management.
